A call from the East
In the heart of Geneva, just a few steps away from the Plainpalais square, the restaurant Azuma celebrates the Land of the Rising Sun, its culinary delights, renowned craftsmanship, and island landscapes. To reflect the many facets of the archipelago, interior designer Julia Christ has envisioned an elegant space with harmonious touches, blending tradition and modernity, enhanced by natural materials crafted with care and precision. This setting immerses us in Japanese culture, like an invitation to travel.
In a softly lit atmosphere, the space is adorned with warm golden reflections as soon as the sunlight brushes against the lime-coated walls, whose raw texture and sandy hues evoke wind-shaped shores. Wallpaper and ceramic tiles in the deep blue shades of distant seas are illuminated, creating a delicate play of light and shadow that shifts throughout the day. Offering a gentle contrast, the smooth, mineral waxed concrete floor highlights the counter’s vivid glazed tiles. Arranged in undulating waves, the tiles draw the eye toward the open kitchen, where chefs work with meticulous care. Symbolising the Japanese goddess Amaterasu, a neon sun in red watches over the room with a benevolent presence.
As a tribute to the fine craftsmanship of the archipelago, the interior designer carefully selected furniture, lighting, and textiles made from natural materials. Hanging from the ceiling, sculptural lamps handwoven in the style of fishing nets cast a soft light that structures the space. This delicate, airy composition harmoniously complements the organic elegance of the charred wood pendants, crafted using a traditional technique. Chosen for their clean lines, the natural oak tables, along with the black-stained chairs and stools, emphasise the refined yet understated elegance of Japanese interiors. Essential to the ambiance, traditional noren curtains with marine motifs, handwoven in Japan, flutter lightly with each passing breeze.
Azuma, which means «East» in Japanese, is much more than a restaurant. It is a place that invites contemplation and travel. Every detail evokes a flavour, a ritual, an art, or a philosophy of life unique to this distant land. In this new Geneva establishment, the soul of Japan is revealed with simplicity and harmony.
